Basic Short School
Basic school is for individuals who have already received basic law enforcement training/certification or will receive the training and certification before the start of the basic patrol school.
If an applicant meets the minimum qualifications, they will go through our hiring process in its entirety which is as follows:
- Applying online
- Completing/submitting required documents to their recruiter
- Polygraph examination
- Background investigation (to include a First Sergeant interview)
- Offer of conditional employment/human resources
- Medical & psychological testing
- Physical fitness and cognitive testing
- Colonel’s review for the applicants final offer of employment
If the applicant receives a final offer, they will then be hired as a cadet at the pay of $51,852/year. The applicant/cadet will attend a basic patrol school at the training academy in Raleigh, which is an estimated duration of 12 weeks. After the successful completion of this training, the cadet will graduate and be sworn in as a North Carolina State trooper.
Basic Hybrid School
The basic hybrid school/process is for an individual who does not have basic law enforcement training/certification and wishes to become a law enforcement officer with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
If an applicant meets the minimum qualifications, they will go through our hiring process in its entirety which is as follows:
- Applying online
- Completing/submitting required documents to their recruiter
- Polygraph examination
- Background investigation (to include a First Sergeant interview)
- Offer of conditional employment/human resources
- Medical & psychological testing
- Physical fitness testing
- Colonel’s review for the applicants final offer of employment
If the applicant receives a final offer of employment, they will then be hired as a cadet at the pay of $51,852/year. The applicant/cadet will attend a local community college full time to complete the basic law enforcement training program. After the successful completion of the BLET program and passing the state exam, the applicant/cadet will attend a “basic patrol school” at the training academy in Raleigh, which is an estimated duration of 12 weeks. After the successful completion of this training, the cadet will graduate and be sworn in as a North Carolina State trooper.
